HISTORY

John William Lucas and Rebecca Bowles Lucas
(Church Leaders)

Our Black History Month honorees for this week is the Rev. John William Lucas, founding pastor of North End Baptist Church.

Lucas was born in Nash County. He was well known in religious affairs locally and throughout North Carolina. For several years he served as president of the Ministerial Alliance and the citywide Minister and Deacon’s Union.

Prior to starting his church in 1922, he was an active member at Saint James Baptist Church. Many prominent Baptist ministers were ordained under his pastorship.

Lucas married Rebecca Bowles of Auburn, New York, and they had five children. Mrs. Lucas was also known as an outstanding church leader, having served for several years as president of the City Missionary Union, an organization composed of women from Rocky Mount. She died Oct. 3, 1943 and at the time, her funeral had the largest number of attendees ever in the city.

John William Lucas died July 24, 1959. He and his wife Rebecca Bowles Lucas are both buried at Unity Cemetery in Rocky Mount.
